The first thing that will strike you about the DreamStation 500 is that it doesn’t look like a traditional CPAP machine. Its sleek white casing and large LCD screen make it look more like a modern bedside alarm clock. The DreamStation actually won the iF Design award in 2016 for product design and it’s easy to see why.
The front-facing screen is angled to make it very easy to read when you are in bed. And it detects the light level in the room and dims its brightness accordingly. So it won’t keep you awake glaring in your face.
Measuring 7.6 x 6.2 x 3.3 inches and weighing just under 3 lbs its footprint is similar to other premium CPAP machines, but it looks much smaller than most with its super low profile shape.
This low profile makes it look much less obtrusive sat on a bedside table. And it’s very stable, making it unlikely to topple over or be pulled off your table if you accidentally tug the hose.
Assembly & Setup
Once you’ve taken everything out of its box, the assembly is very minimal. The humidifier comes already assembled to the CPAP machine. If you need to remove it then it’s a simple case of pressing a button and pulling the two apart.
Other than that all you have to do is plug in the power supply. This is easy to spot as the power socket is colored bright green. Then you connect the heated hose. This simply requires lining up the electrical terminals and pushing it into the socket on the machine.
The DreamStation has auto adjusting pressure that changes to suit your breathing and apnea events throughout the night, so you can just switch it on and allow it to work its magic.
If however, your physician has given you recommended settings it’s very easy to enter these values in the ‘Therapy’ menu.
You can access all the settings by the large dial on the front of the machine. Simply turning it to scroll through the menus and pressing it to select.
It’s a simple system that works really well because the menus are well designed and you don’t have to learn what a multitude of buttons do.
The DreamStation’s auto features couldn’t make it easier to use on a daily basis. The only manual operation you have to perform is to fill the humidifier chamber with distilled water. This is a simple procedure, especially as the unit is so stable. You undo a clasp that allows you to lift the lid and then you can easily remove the humidifier chamber. Fill lines are clear and easy to read.
With your DreamStation in standby mode, all you have to do is fit your mask and breathe normally. The CPAP will sense your breathing and start delivering your metered air flow.
If you get up during the night then you simply remove your mask and the DreamStation will automatically stop until you put your mask back on.
All your sleep data is tracked automatically. This includes your daily use or compliance, AHI (Apnea Hypopnea Index), mask leakage measurements, and CSA (Central Sleep Apnea) events.
The motor is very quiet in operation producing just a gentle constant hum that is very easy to fall asleep to.
Cleaning the DreamStation is very easy. You can easily wipe over the unit with a damp cloth. And you’ll have no problem thoroughly cleaning the humidifier as it’s designed to have very few hard to get to nooks and crannies.
The hose disconnects completely so you can wash it in soapy water in your sink.
Both washable re-useable and disposable filters are included.
The DreamStation comes with its own made to measure travel case that fits the CPAP machine as well as the humidifier, hose, mask and power supply. The case is padded polyester that will protect your CPAP from minor bumps and scrapes in transit but wouldn’t protect it from any larger impacts.
Although you may not want to travel with the humidifier it’s good that you have the option.
The power supply accepts international voltages. You would just need to use the correct adaptor so it fits the power socket in the country you’re visiting.
The DreamStation can also be operated from a 12V power supply. So you could use it on the road or camping if you buy the correct power supply.
Smartphone App & Software
A special mention has to go to the Encore software and DreamMapper smartphone app that are included with the DreamStation.
If you’re interested in keeping track of your condition (and you should be because this is the best way to see an improvement) it’s possible to view and log a history of all kinds of data.
The DreamMapper app is available on Android and iPhone and connects to your DreamStation CPAP via Bluetooth.
When you first use it the app will ask you a few questions about how you use the CPAP including what type of mask you wear and then it will walk you through ‘pairing’ it with your CPAP machine so your data can be transferred.
The main screen is a summary of your previous night’s sleep. It will show you information such as how many hours you used your CPAP machine, your AHI number and how well your mask fitted.
All the data is shown in very easy to understand charts that clearly show how much progress you have made night by night.
You can set target goals and the app will show you if you’ve met or exceeded them.
You can also set reminders for tasks such as cleaning or replacing the filters.
For most users, the app will give you as much data as you’re likely to need but if you really want to look at your data in even more depth the EncorePro software will offer you even more options than the app.
The DreamStation 500 is one of the best CPAP machines available.
It offers all the features you are ever likely to need and will provide you with the best possibility of improving your Sleep Apnea.
It consistently receives positive reviews from owners who find little to fault with it. And it has an excellent reputation for reliability. This is a CPAP machine that will last you many years.
